VIN Numbers VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet, except for alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of the VIN code are a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal crucial information about your car or truck. Modern cars are digital libraries that hold many details about their history and specifications. A VIN number is the key that unlocks this information that allows you to find out everything from whether your vehicle is in a recall to the number of times it's been owned by different owners. A VIN number is comprised of various sections, each of which contains particular information. The first digit, for example, indicates what type of vehicle the car is, for example, an automobile for passengers, a pickup truck, or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit indicates the car's assembly division. The fourth through eighth digits indicate the model type, restraint systems type, body type and engine and transmission codes. Then the whole VIN will be converted back to its original form, by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is same as the check number then the VIN is valid.
